Really interesting visit. You get to see and understand how life was in that prison. Audio guide is provided for the main prison areas and free visit in the rest of the island with no time constraints. I recommend buying tickets in advance and make sure you arrive 30 min in advance to avoid missing the visit and the money!! ( No refund, no reallocation offered!).

Very disappointed in the organization of this whole set up. I bought tickets in advance. We got there early as told. A few boats went out with 20-30 people on it. Our boat went out with at least 100 people. I know it is about the money with this company or they would limit the sales to get the best experience for everyone. The private tours are limited to 20 for just that reason. I have my younger daughter with me and see was all about the history and learning about it. While she was being pushed around by the crowd, she didn't learn much. She would try to take pictures and wasn't able to as there were way to many people in the way. She may have gotten a whole 10 pictures, if lucky. This company needs to do better to make sure that is a good experience for everyone. Limited sales per group going there is a start.

Did the night tour, the trip from pier to Alcatraz was awesome. Beautiful views over the bay enjoying the sunset. Audio tour was super handy to enjoy the experience of this visit. Very informative, allows you to take your time exploring the place. Would recommend taking a jacket if you plan on taking one of the last ferry back off The Rock as it can get busy and full so sitting on the outer decks can be a tad chilly.

Northern Cali native here, and after nearly a half century on Earth, I (along with my wife) FINALLY visited "The Rock." It was totally worth it! The ferry and island staff were friendly, knowledgeable, and professional. The guided listening tour was informative and interesting. We really like that the listening tour included the voices of actual staff and prisoners who were once stationed at Alcatraz. The whole experience took 3 hours, including the ferry ride to and from. Which was perfect for us. There may be street parking near Pier 33, but meter times will be limited. We decided not to take any chances and parked in a parking garage nearby, at Pier 29. A 2-3 minute walk to the Alcatraz Tour doc.

10/10 Must see attraction!! Plan for a few hours. There's so much to see and learn about with surprisingly beautiful gardens around the island. The bird takeover (sanctuary) was something else to experience through all senses (visual and scent overload). The audio walking tour was good - better than following a group around with a guide.
